Workshop - Shodō Calligraphy

We are delighted to announce Shodo (書道: calligraphy) workshop, hosted by Under the Mango Tree and led by Okinawan artist and calligrapher Sugano Matsusaki.

During this workshop, participants will be introduced to the philosophy and gestures behind the ascetic art of Japanese calligraphy. You will learn about its traditional tools and create your own Kakizomé (書き初め) — a character expressing your wish or resolution for the year 2026.

Over the course of three meditative, quiet hours, you will enter an intimate dialogue between history and self, your resolution and its calligraphic form.

What to Expect

Guided Practice: Session includes an opening talk, a guidance into the art of calligraphy, practice, and often your own closing work to carry with you home. The complete session is for 3 Hrs.

No prior experience is needed. 17.01.2026, Saturday

Instructor Sugano Matsusaki: A calligrapher from Okinawa, Japan, with more than 25 years of experience. While exploring her own calligraphy based on traditional techniques, Sugano traces the lines of legendary Chinese and Japanese calligraphers in history, striving to recreate their perfect line and timeless beauty.
