Introduction

Gunu Kim – The Return of Life

UNDER THE MANGO TREE is pleased to present an exhibition of Gunu Kim.
The title situates the artists practice within the intersections of desires, values, belief and psychology.
Many of his works in this exhibition use the classical symbol of Mandala/ Life as the starting points. This recurrence is then combined in a form with which we usually interprate art; figuration and abstraction, traditional and contemporary, creative and destructive, religious and secular. His works may appear „ asian“ at first, but they certainly participate in the quintessentiall dialogues of „Recurrence of life and reveal themselves to be both universal and personally adept. ( Adept means experienced ).

GunuKim was born in 1956 in south Korea. After his migration to Canada in 1994 he attended the Espace Verre Art School, Montral, Canada in 1995. Between 2001 – 2002 he specialised in glass blowing, hot casting, sculptural Kiln forming and glass cold working at the Urban Art School, New York, U.S.A.

Solo shows of his works have been exhibited at Fundacion Santillana para Iberoamerica Bogota, Colombia ( 2004 ), Gallery La Mer, Seoul, Korea ( 2006), Itaewon atelier, Seoul Korea ( 2007 ), TUV Rheinland Art Gallery Seoul, Korea ( 2008), Gallery Sung, Glass Art Daejon, Korea, Myung Galerie, Berlin.
