Introduction
Kanchan Chander – In Transition
Defined as one of the valueable printmakers in India from 1980s, Kanchan Chander has always explored issues of personal identity, social roles and indian traditions through all the mediums : Printmaking, paintings and now Collages.
In a natural response to the repressions towards women in India, a number of her recent collages have been an expression where she personifies the freedom, strength and expression to sexuality with Frida Kahlo, the famous Mexican artist, as one of the main subjects or the headless male torsos decorated with feathers and embellishments. She uses her own portraits, sequins, laces and swaroskis to transform the surface, connecting loudly to the underlying theme of structures, beliefs, crossing boundaries and the passage of time.
Her works are in collection with the National Gallery of Modern Art, India; Lalit kala Akademi, New Delhi; Fukuoka museum of Asian Art, Japan, British Museum, London, Victoria & Albert Museum, London; Ecole national Des Beaux Arts, Paris
