Introduction

Yearning to be Elsewhere
… dynamic paintings fired by colour …
Lynne Cameron

We travel, always only ourselves,
Across the surface of unknowable
Lands, straight across.

Carrying our lived memories
In one small bag, we arrive to find them
Echoing back.
-Lynne Cameron, 2016

With their bright colours and strong gestures, Lynne Cameron’s paintings conjure landscapes of possibility that invite viewers to pause and explore. To find an ‘elsewhere’ to retreat into. To empty the mind and fill the soul. To find paths that lead deep inside. To wander and to stay awhile, to be with the self by going beyond the self.

Fearless colour is at the heart of Cameron’s painting process. Colours respond to each other in swirling conversations, reaching out across the surface. Layers of thick and thin colour create depth and spaces, echoes and resonances. The paint is used dry and wet; it is dabbed, stroked and scratched. Colours are boldly juxtaposed, as when fluorescent pink is placed alongside orange in a reference to East African textiles – a memory of elsewhere for Cameron, whose academic research into empathy and metaphor took her around the world before bringing her to Berlin.

Since October 2015, Professor Lynne Cameron has been Artist-in-Residence and Senior Fellow at Cinepoetics, Centre for Advanced Film Studies, Freie Universität. This is her second solo show in Berlin. She has exhibited in London, Oxford and Scotland, and sells her paintings internationally.

Almost exactly 20 years ago, Cameron began drawing and painting, shocked into a new awareness of beauty and colour by the restoration of clarity after operations to remove cataracts in her eyes. She pursued her passion for art through part-time and short courses, including ‘Advanced Painting’ at Morley College, London, and ‘Painting in Contemporary Art Practice’ at the Slade School of Art.

For many years, painting found its place in her life alongside her academic career. Lynne Cameron studied at Oxford University and took her PhD from the University of London. She was Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Leeds and Open University. She has published several books on metaphor and language, including Metaphor and Reconciliation (2011), which investigates the contribution of metaphor to rebuilding empathy after violence and conflict. This concept is a deep concern for Cameron and continues to influence her work.

The Gallery UNDER THE MANGO TREE proudly presents her works and invites everyone to visit the exhibition.
