Introduction

IT´S MY LINE.
Michael Ratte

Familiarity often strives for the exposure of the unknown; behind the material, fantasy extends itself. The distances of time may be relatively short, it may, however, take a lifetime to find your color on the paper; to move your eye with the flow of your hand, to let the brush leave the traces of your presence on the paper – and then the whispers from the grass arise, which the artist may have heard and now records. Herein lies the abstraction of an unprecedented freedom and confidence stored within a spirit that lets it all happen.

Michael Ratte was familiar with this dream since his childhood and now his strokes reveal how far he chased it with his free spirit. The limits of fantasy have just been extended – and with what a force.

Gallery Under The Mango Tree proudly presents his first solo show – It´s my Line.

Using ink and acrylic color, he creates strong works on paper that manipulate and invent forms to explore the relationship between the moment and fantasy. Exploring the countless nuances of these phenomena reveals Michael´s intent to capture the stillness of an infinite space within the limits of a temporal reality.

Moving through his cognitive landscapes which seem transitory yet persistent in their natural existence, one observes lineal structures of forms, the peeling back of layers, the carving out of composition, and that fantastic quality of its presence in unfamiliar environs; and then a language is formed which is perhaps just the beginning of a process of one thing merging with the other, a connection between the form and the self. His works are an interplay between stillness and motion, between the transitory and permanence. Sometimes almost playing with textures and unusual mediums, it all seems like a whisper on the paper from the far off lands where he travels to.

Born in Münster/Westphalia, Michael Ratte chose the professional route that initially led him to the textile trade. In the late 70´s, after his return from Milan, he founded his own fashion company in Munich and developed his own collections. It was first in 2005 that he studied art history for a few semesters and also started attending painting classes with Jess Walter, a post graduate of the Munich art academy. Thereafter he began to look for and develop his own style.

He currently works and lives in Munich.
