Gallery Under the Mango Tree proudly presents works of Nadiia Doicheva, a talented artist from Ukraine who transfers her painterly, academically trained skills into digital techniques and paints pictures directly on the computer. The computer paintings astound in their old masterly elaboration. At the same time Nadiia Doicheva’s capricious, colorful portraits in watercolor on paper seem like an ancestral gallery of old acquaintances. They evoke memories of idiosyncratic characters and have the idiosyncrasy of being absolutely timeless. The young Ukrainian artist seems to be in the artistic genealogy of Jeanne Mammen.
Nadiia Doicheva’s actual painting in large-format acrylic paintings on canvas, shows finely crafted portraits of real people in unreal surroundings. Her admiration for the Baroque and Mannerism is obvious. In the paintings she is always her own model and in self-portraits she explores different possibilities of life roles and states of being and artistically tests how many options of being human could be in a person and in her and her life path.
From February 24, 2022, everything changed for the artist and her compatriots. Painting was out of the question, security and sheer survival were and are the most important issues. Despite adverse circumstances, the artist reacts with her art to the situation of life in war, describes and artistically processes her fears and experiences. In the most recent paintings, the light-dark contrast and the focus on the center of the picture are increased with a reduced color palette. Her self-portraits no longer show her face, but her naked body from the back. The self-portraits, portraits and gestures have the admonishing and passionate character of a Käthe Kollwitz. They are also a rebellion against oneself as an artist, not to let perception, seeing and the language of art remain silent. And an appeal to people to do the same.
