Gallery Under The Mango Tree is proud to present the second Solo Show within Germany of artist Saurabh Narang (*1975, India). Titled “Interactions” the exhibition explores the question of perceiving our surroundings within a globalised world. While Saurabh’s works clearly remindwestern viewers of European minimalism, as we know them from the German Bauhaus, he has never been exposed to their work in formal art education or through physical visits. His oeuvre breaks with the essentializing projected assumptions of organic geometries within a seemingly fixed perception of what the west sees as “Indian” Art.
Early memories of his mothers work with embroidery seem to be the source of his meditative expression focusing on lines and patterns. As a young person he explored the crafts of silk screen printing, where the mesh of threads and the light that was shining through them while investigating it for residues of colour, revealed a curious interaction of colours and patterns which have left a mark on Saurabh Narang’s inner eye. Narang deconstructs the world into vibrations of energy that you cannot see, which he claims are represented in each line and the space between them.
The viewers are enveloped by works that expand the foundational element of the line into spatial explosions, characterized by responsive lines and grids drawn upon grounds of preserved paper, Saurabh’s art elegantly negotiate the confines of structure, space, draftsmanship, and the metaphysical. For the architectural eye his explorations are reminder of deconstructivist drawings by renowned architects such as Daniel Liebeskind or Zaha Hadid. What follows in the central room is a complete reduction into several series of diagonals layered in crossing patterns that often reveal a moiré effect adding a level of uncontrollability to the plethora of interactions visible in all of his works.
For those interested in Textiles, his works remind of the planning sketches by some Bauhaus artists like Gunta Stölzl or Anni Albers. Expanding in this realm of delicate drawing within South Asian Art History we remember the minimalist works of Nasreen Mohamedi (1937–1990) and the works of contemporary Pakistani artist Waqas Khan.
While those that are looking for references within the world of European painting might remember the works of abstract constructivists like Wasily Kandinsky, Josef Albers or moreso of earlier pioneers like swedish artist Hilma af Klint. His work are a reminder of transcultural connectivity, which in times of geopolitical fragmentation and a developing multipolar world order, serve as an important reminder of learning to relate to each other beyond boundaries of constructed national identities.
Saurabh Narang was born in north India in 1975. He is an autodidactic artist and has had several group exhibitions in Norway, United Arab Emirates, and India. His works are in several private collections.
